Barney Stein combined the job of career photojournalist with official team photographer chronicling the glory years of the Brooklyn Dodgers. For twenty years from 1937 until 1957 Stein covered the mythical underdog Dodgers teams through successive seasons at historic Ebbets Field and spring training in Florida. He combined a journalist's curiosity with an eye for capturing the drama of the scene. His photographs record action on the field, the drama of the game reflected in the faces of the spectators in the stands, and celebrities surrounding the game itself.

Stein also documented the early career of Jackie Robinson, whose entry into the Major Leagues on the 1947 Dodgers team broke the color barrier, heralding integration on the field.
